This is an old revision of the document!
George Street is a 18th century addition on the western edge of the old town, running parallel to West Street and, taking a lead from the mediaeval town planners, having staggered lanes connecting the two streets.
Somewhere on the western side of George Street in the late 18th century was a seawater bathing establishment – premises that would later lend their name to the 19th century area of town still known as the Bathside.
George Street once ended at the White Hart Hotel – which fronted both George Street and West Street – and you had to cross the railway lines to get to the Bathside but today you can drive out onto the A120 bypass which is on the old medieval shoreline.
