George Street is a 18th century addition, formed by development, on the western edge of the old town, running parallel to West Street and, taking a lead from the medieval town planners, having staggered lanes connecting the two streets.
On a 1843 tithe map what is now George Street is called White Hart Lane and it isn't until the 1861 census we find George Street being named.
Somewhere on the western side of what would become George Street in the late 18th century was a seawater bathing establishment – premises that would later lend their name to the 19th century area of town still known as the Bathside.
George Street once ended at the White Hart Hotel – which fronted both George Street and West Street – and you had to cross the railway lines to get to the Bathside but today you can drive out onto the A120 bypass which is on the old medieval shoreline.
