The Harwich History Wiki

The Harwich History Wiki was created from the Harwich Architectural Survey Project using a grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund.

The Harwich Architectural Survey looked at the oldest buildings in Harwich, those thought to have been standing in 1611 to be precise, the year that Christopher Jones, master of the Mayflower left Harwich, the town he grew up in, for Rotherhithe. Jones left a town that had prospered greatly in Elizabethan times and the project enabled us to piece together part of the story of the development of the town through its oldest buildings.

So addictive was this process that we decided to continue on and make the project the foundation of a bigger project to record as much as possible about the history of the old town, highlighting surviving and lost buildings as well as the people that lived in them and the events that helped shape it.

None of this would be possible without our dedicated team of historians, Harwich Society members, Harwich building owners and the wider community and, of course, players of the National Lottery who helped us sow the seed.

This is a long term project so do keep checking back to see what we've added.
