====== The Quay ====== The Quay as we see it today is a Victorian construction because prior to the coming of the railway the old town retained it's medieval shape which had no roadway adjacent to the estuary, with each north-south road ending at a collection of private quays. Originally the railway ran right along the quay and terminated outside the Great Eastern Hotel (now Quayside Court) so passengers for the continent could disembark at the Continental Pier. This ended with the construction of Parkeston Quay further up the river Stour which effectively ended the role of the old town as a passenger terminus. Today the Quay provides convenient access to the old town and affords spectacular views of the estuary of the rivers Orwell and Stour.
