====== Market Street ====== Market Street was probably once more of a market place than a street but it became successively built up, possibly as stallholders built on their pitches, and then much more street-shaped in the 19th century. If you came to Harwich in Medieval times you would have most likely found a square between High Street (now Kings Head Street) and Middle Street (now Church Street) where the market took place. The Charter granted to the town by King James I in 1604 defined that there was to be a market every Friday and it was up to the town burgesses to ensure the quality of goods sold there. If you walked the length of Market Street eastward in olden days you would come to the town wall just before the intersection with what is now Kings Quay Street and passing through Barton's Gate you would find the town cage, where offenders were locked up, and the pillory or stocks used to punish minor social offences. With the market “square” becoming too narrow and 19th century shop fronts effectively turning it into a street, the actual market was moved into the now built-up area on the other side of the old wall in Outpart Eastward. ===== Buildings ===== * 5 and 6 Market Street * 7 Market Street * 9 Market Street * 21 Market Street * 22 Market Street
