====== John Moore ====== **John Moore** (1585-1638) was a mariner and shipwright from Harwich, who held a quarter share in the //Mayflower// in the ship's final days. ===== Early Life ===== Moore was baptised in St. Nicholas Church, Harwich, on the 14th of September 1585, the son of Thomas Moore, a wealthy man. His parents both died by 1602, meaning he entered adulthood as an orphan, but with his brother Thomas and sisters around him. ===== Adult Life ===== ==== Harwich ==== On the 21st of January 1608, Moore married Marie Barnaby at St. Nicholas. Between 1608 and 1622, John and Marie had seven children together, all baptised at Harwich, four of whom would survive into adulthood, all daughters - Josian (1608), Susan (1613), Margaret (1615), and Sarah (1619). ==== Rotherhithe and the Mayflower ==== Between February 1622 (the baptism of his son John) and July 1625 (the burial of said son), Moore moved to Rotherhithe. Much like Christopher Jones, he had gotten to the age of about 40, and chose to move from Harwich to Rotherhithe for the sake of his career. On the 26th of May 1624, an appraisement of the //Mayflower// was made, prior to being broken up and sold on. Of the four owners at that time, one was absent, two were familiar to //Mayflower// historians - the relict of Jones, and Robert Child - but the other was a new name, that of John Moore. It is unclear when Moore picked up his share, but it was between 1612 and 1624, meaning he may well have been one of the owners when she made her historic voyage in 1620. Notably, one of the appraisers was Robert Clay, brother-in-law of Christopher Jones, and known to Moore. ==== Death ==== On the 28th of May 1638, an ailing Moore wrote his will. In it, he mentions his four daughters, in baptism order - Josian Webb, Susan Shields, Margaret Worlich, Sarah Prince - as well as a house at Harwich he purchased off of the aforementioned Robert Clay. Moore was buried at Rotherhithe on the 14th of June that year.
